Our first day at sea has been a chance for us all to receive essential training for life onboard (as well as getting used to the rocking and the rolling of the Southern Ocean!). We’ve now all been briefed in survival training, including how to use our life jackets and survival suits that, in an emergency, could be a matter of life and death. We’ve also all been shown how to work safely and efficiently on deck by the ship’s Marine Technicians (MT’s), how to use all the computer systems onboard and even shown all the large equipment that is scattered around the deck that we’ll be using in a few short hours.

It’s been a busy day of meetings, but tomorrow will be even busier as we start the first day of science. We should arrive at our first sampling station in the morning – Burdwood Bank – where we can start our multibeam survey.
