Meet Richard Nelson

How long have you worked on Tangaroa?

Since I started at NIWA in April 2004 I have participated in 4 fisheries surveys and one seismic survey. My last voyage was for 4 weeks in sub-Antarctic waters near Campbell Is.

What is your Job?

Electronics technician fisheries acoustics.

What does a typical day involve?

On this voyage I am operating the Middle Deeps Drop Camera over Rumble III. When I am not doing that, I am helping with CTD water samples.

What do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy the uniqueness and variation of the work that I do for NIWA.

What’s the least enjoyable aspect of your work?

Starting shift at midnight.

Do you get seasick? Any tips for not getting ill?

No. While standing on your right leg, place your left finger in right ear and spin anti-clockwise whistling “Four Seasons in One Day”. This will not work but it will take your mind of the seasickness.

What is your favorite memory from working on the ship?

Sailing into Wellington harbour after a long voyage.

What do you do when off shift, and in your spare time at home?

I enjoy music and movies and review music for an internet magazine audioenz.co.nz. I have also been known to enjoy a nice walk which is often spoiled by a small white ball.
