Meet Neil Pestell

How long have you worked on the Tangaroa?

I have been working for NIWA either as a mate on the Tangaroa or skipper of the Kaharoa on and off since the early 90s. I retired from commercial fishing a couple of years ago but can’t get the hang of being totally idle yet so the NIWA work provides an interest and extra money.

What is your job?

Second mate on the Tangaroa, doing the 12 to 4 shift twice a day on the bridge.

What does a typical day involve?

Towing, dunking, dropping or dragging whatever gadget the scientists want to play with next!

What do you enjoy the most?

Since I am only here from time to time a lot of the gear is new to me so it is always interesting to see what we are going to play with.

What’s the least enjoyable aspect of your work?

Being up at two in the morning, but someone has to do it!

Do you get seasick? Any tips for not getting ill?

I am never seasick but recommend fresh air, keeping busy, and a positive attitude. I am told that chocolate ice cream is soothing on the throat!

What is your favourite memory from working on the ship?

I always enjoy looking out of the bridge windows and seeing nothing but horizon in every direction. I’d hate to live somewhere where I couldn’t see the ocean every day.

What do you do when off shift, and in your spare time at home?

On board I try and get down to the gym for an hour after my bridge watch and then watch a movie followed by a snooze before my graveyard shift at midnight. At home I enjoy recreational saltwater fishing, walking, swimming, flying radio control aerobatic model aircraft. I enjoy being idle and being able to do pretty much what I want!
