Meet Shane Harvey

How long have you worked on the Tangaroa?

14 years.

What is your job?

Able bodied seaman, I do general deck work.

What does a typical day involve?

Deploying and retrieving sampling equipment, anything from dropping a camera on top of a seamount to taking water samples from a depth of 5000m.

What do you enjoy the most?

The places that I have travelled, everywhere from Raoul to Antarctica.

What’s the least enjoyable aspect of your work?

The least enjoyable part of the job would have to be leaving the family.

Do you get seasick? Any tips for not getting ill?

I have been seasick but not on Tangaroa. Tips: keep eating and drinking and keep busy.

What is your favourite memory from working on the ship?

One of the most favourite would be standing on a beach on Lorde Howe Island. It was part of a joint exploratory trawling survey in the northern Tasman Sea.

What do you do when off shift, and in your spare time at home?

Sometimes off shift I’ll just kick back and watch a movie or just listen to music or write an e-mail home to the family.
