What do you study and why is it important?
Marine ecology and Fisheries ecology, primarily fish ageing
What will you be doing on the Graveyard voyage?
Operating the Deep Towed Imaging System rig and taking specimen photos

University of Auckland, New Zealand
Central Institute of Technology, New Zealand
Victoria University, New Zealand
How did you become interested in the ocean?
From watching Jacque Cousteau programmes on T.V. as a child
Do you get seasick? And if so, any tips on how not to?
Occasionally at the start of a sea trip – remedy take drugs (Marzine or Avomine)
What do you enjoy about your work?
Being given the opportunity to discover new things and observing how things or systems work
What are some of the challenges you face?
Upskilling to become conversant with contemporary technical trends and avenues of research
What have you learned/discovered? What do you hope to learn?
On this trip I have learned how to operate the new seabed imaging system. I have also observed first hand the extent of human impacts on the benthic environment on some of the Chatham Rise seamounts
How do you spend your spare time?
Aboard ship – by playing with photos on my computer, watching DVDs or reading books
