Meet Roger Goodison

Meet Roger Goodison

How long have you worked on the Tangaroa?

15 years

What is your job?

Master

What does a typical day involve?

I work 2 x 4hour shifts on the Bridge everday, 4 – 8am and 4 – 8pm. During the morning after 8 I also work on reports, communications with the office etc

What do you enjoy the most?

Wide variety of the work that we do and meeting all the people involved in our operation

Whats the least enjoyable aspect of your work?

Miss home and family interactions because I am away for 6 months of the year. And bad weather

Do you get seasick? Any tips for not getting ill?

I sometimes get a bit queasy when we leave port straight into bad weather and it normally lasts a day or two. I drink plenty of water and don’t eat much.

What is your favourite memory from working on the ship?

Too many to list but have seen most parts of the New Zealand coast now and have been to places that many haven’t been, such as the Sub-Antarctic islands

What do you do when not working?

Read, play my guitar, try and get round the ship and talk to people about what they are doing, use the ships gym (not as often as I should!)
