Meet Mark Rosenberg

What is your job title?
Oceanographer.
What do you study and why is it important?
Circulation of the Southern Ocean. Currently important and very topical as it relates to climate change.
What will you be doing on the voyage?
Recovering moorings, and doing a CTD watch.
Where were you educated?
Sydney University.
How did you become interested in the ocean?
Grew up near the beach – then wanted to get boat rides
Do you get seasick? And if so, any tips on how not to?
Only on small boats – best tip is a large greasy breakfast.
What do you enjoy about your work?
The outdoor deck work, plus, of course, the port stops. Oh, and producing a good quality data set.
What are some of the challenges you face?
Huey and all his moods (“Huey” is the god of seafarers and surfers – he is directly responsible for the weather).
What have you learned/discovered? What do you hope to learn?
People come up with the strangest ideas in the pursuit of science (and in general). For this cruise, hopefully from the data we can learn how much water flows through gaps in the Macquarie Ridge.
How do you spend your spare time?
Music, and thinking of the tropics.
