Return to the Graveyard

Last year Tangaroa, the research vessel of New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, sailed south – uncovering seamount communities never before seen. In the year that has followed scientists have started to work through the many hours of video, hundreds of photographs and the samples collected to learn more about these southern seamounts.

But just as it is exhilarating to visit somewhere for the first time, it is also exciting to go back and visit old friends. On June 12th Tangaroa's ropes were again cast and she returned to the Graveyard.

Learn more about her visit in the pages below and experience first hand some of the stories that the scientists themselves send from sea.
