Tim Shank invites samples from seamounts for barcoding

In addition to the CoML Barcoding effort Dr Tim Shank is in the midst of developing a similar, but independently proposed, program for the barcoding of marine life inhabiting Seamounts (and chemosynthetic systems). As the liaison to the Bar Code of Life for CenSeam he has been receiving samples from seamounts to sequence and submit the standard mitochondrial COI gene region to the database. Tim hopes to have several hundred barcodes submitted by the end of the year.

If you have specimens/samples from seamounts that you would like to add to the BOLD effort (that you don't plan to sequence yourself) Tim will gladly sequence them for you, and be sure they get submitted to the database.

If you would like to see a formal Seamount Barcoding program, a statement (even a brief email) expressing your enthusiasm for such a program, or your interest to submit specimens to BOLD, would assist the effort to get a formal program with funding support. You can contact Tim via CenSeam or visit his website.
